The Principled Innovation® (PI) Card Decks inspire reflective decision-making grounded in core values and practical wisdom. Each card asks generative and reflective questions that help people slow down, consider multiple perspectives and engage more deeply with character as they work through dilemmas, design human-centered solutions and build compassionate cultures and climates. The cards are based on the Principled Innovation® framework’s four connected character domains: moral, intellectual, civic and performance.

The cards now come in four age-adapted decks, each tailored to its audience. The Practice PI deck pairs two questions that build on each other with a focus prompt and the PI practice, or skill, it explores. The Preschool deck offers separate cards for adults and for adults to use with children, built around awareness of self, others and environments. The K–5 deck includes two questions on each card, one for grades K–2 and one for grades 3–5. The 6–12 deck guides students through a four-step decision process: describe, reflect, act and examine.

The PI card decks remain one of our most popular tools because they are easy to use and can be adapted to fit all kinds of activities. Use them to open or close meetings, guide team dialogue, spark classroom discussion, deepen professional learning, support Communities of Practice or anchor personal reflection. Each deck includes suggested activities, such as morning-meeting conversations, read-aloud connections, weekly journaling and reflection routines for teams. Over time, the questions help people build habits of thoughtful inquiry, aligning values, intentions and actions in service of the social good.

The digital card decks are free to use in English and Spanish. On the card deck website, a daily question draws one card from each deck, and you can save favorites across decks or share any card with a link. You can also design your own card by choosing a domain and writing a prompt for the front and a reflection for the back. We hope you enjoy using these cards as much as we enjoyed creating them!
